Punctuate It!

Monday  •  07:28 PM  •  50 words

Well, I needed to distract myself from worrying about my Canadian visa application and blogging sounded like fun so when I found this Punctuation Game, I decided to play it just to have something to blog about. Sadly, I only got 83%. I thought my punctuation was perfect. :(

100% for me! (I’m such a smartarse.)

Here’s a good rule of thumb for working out where the possessive apostrophe should go. (My old English teacher taught it to me, and it’s almost foolproof. I don’t think many people know about it, though. Shame.)

Here’s the rule: ask yourself the question “Who owns the X?” (where X is the object being possessed), and then put the apostrophe *immediately* after the answer to that question.

So, in the case of “the babies bibs”, you ask yourself “Who owns the bibs?” and the answer is “the babies”, so you put the apostrophe immediately after the word “babies”, thus: “the babies’ bibs”.

Another example: “childrens books”. Ask yourself “Who owns the books?” The answer is “children”, so the result is “children’s books”.

Good rule, isn’t it?
