Mathematician Quotations

Thursday  •  07:33 PM  •  213 words

I found this searchable database of quotations from mathematicians quite fascinating. I love reading quotations because more often than not, I’ll find something that hits close to home. Albert Einstein expressed my sentiment so perfectly with this: “I have never belonged wholeheartedly to a country, a state, nor to a circle of friends, nor even to my own family.” And Bertrand Russell, well, he was just very good with words and had a lot to say. I agree completely with this quote by him: “The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts.”

For some reasons all these quotes remind me of my philosophy professor from university. If you’re Indonesian, you may have heard of Tommy F. Awuy. Well, that’s the guy. He rocks!

Oh, speaking of quotes, here’s a quote from my brand new t-shirt: “Darling, you are like a virtuoso musician and my body your delicate mandolin.” No kidding. See, I didn’t pay attention to what was written on the t-shirt. I liked the colour and the soft fabric so I bought it. I only read the writing when I was back home. I’m definitely not wearing that particular t-shirt when I’m going out.

Hi Firda,
up and running again?
I knew the site, and after having read a lot of the quotes from (and stories by) mathematicians I’m thoroughly convinced they’re weird. There’s nothing wrong with that!
I’ve always liked the Russell quote you mention, because it simply is so damn true. And truer every day, I’m afraid.

About them weird mathematician. Maybe you heard of Paul Erdös. Well, he was weird “hors catégorie”. Anecdote:

On one occasion, Erdös met a mathematician and asked him where he was from. “Vancouver,” the mathematician replied. “Oh, then you must know my good friend Elliot Mendelson,” Erdös said. The reply was “I AM your good friend Elliot Mendelson.” [LOL]

That is an amazing quote by Bertrand Russell. I would put it in my email sig if I wasn’t scared of offending certain people :)
